Saw a marketplace ad for a 288 lantern and case for $4. I picked it up today and gave it a quick cleanup. I don't have any of these newer model lanterns, 286,288,290, etc. All of my stuff is older. I have a few questions about them. The date on it is 08/94.

Is this missing a heat shield or other parts? If it's missing do I need to get one to run it?

I thought I read something about them having plastic eccentric blocks. Is this correct? The one in the lantern looks like it's metal.

It looks like it was barely used. Do I need to go ahead and tear it apart and switch the schrader/ FA tube before I use it or am I ok if I don't have any problems getting it going?

It didn't have a globe and I had a MIC laying around that I put on it. Would it have originally had a picket fence globe?

That IS a clean one for sure.
I see it has the hold down clip on the air tube so it did have a heat shield.  I wouldn't run it for long periods of time without one.  OCP should have the shields.
I know the earlier (late '80-s) 288s had pickets but I don't think ones by '94 did.  (I was wrong once before thought)

Yours should have a heat shield. I believe that's what the clip is for on the air tube. I feel better having the shield, thinking it'll be better on the Schrader valve, but I'm not sure they're absolutely necessary. As far as the Schrader is concerned,I always try them first. Seems to me they always work but may not shut down all the way.. the picket fence globe I believe stopped with the CL series lanterns? Nice lantern, especially for the price👍

The heat shield you will need Andy will look like this with the anti globe rattle outriggers. This one is from a 288 dated 1-00. Click image for larger version - Name: 96CCBC6C-6BD7-4902-BFDF-28CED58874F3.jpeg, Views: 70, Size: 129.69 KB

It looks like your pump cap is a plastic clipon style.

That likely means your pump cup is neoprene and not leather. Switch it out for a leather one.

Unless you are going to use it in cold weather, put some oil on it and use it. I have neoprene cups that are over 30 years old and are still going strong. Why mess with it until you have to.

Very nice lantern!!!

You will need the 3 prong heat shield. It doesn't have the glass expansion clips. Those clips are already attached to the base plate of your lantern. I am not sure of the availability of the 3 prong shields. I am also not sure the new one will work as it is a 2 point vs. a 3 point expansion clips. There may be interference with it. At worse case, you may have to remove one of the clips on the base plate to make room. Also, the retainer is not required for the newer 2 point heat shield.

I hope this helps.

I was just thinking, if you suspect you have a plastic eccentric but aren't certain, you could put a match to it and see if it melts.  If it does, you would be replacing it anyway.

That one is for a 286, not a 288 and will not fit. the 3 prong ones can be found on the bay, but you could just use this one from OCP and replace the bottom plate and heatshied; https://www.oldcolemanparts.com/product.php?productid=231&cat=&page=1

Thanks. The pics I saw had 3 legs and the OCP one came with 2 legs and the plate. I wasn't sure what was right.

the heat shields are often found on top of the mixing chamber, at least on the lanterns I've bought.

I've not looked hard but I've not been able to find the 3 leg heat shields. I did but several of the shields that come that have the anti rattle clips made into it. Last I checked, coleman still sold those new.
