200A and 202 reproduction

Mister Wilson
I got this 8-54 202 cheap from a picker friend over a year ago.  It's just been hanging around in the basement.  Wrong vent, wrong filler cap, wrong valve wheel, no globe, but it has the ceramic burner cap and nickel plated generator.  The reflector was a bonus.  The plating is worn through around the filler neck and areas of the collar, and is very thin most everywhere else.

1.jpg  2.jpg

I recently got a proper vent from Will (Gavercronos) and it inspired me to finally do something about the condition of this poor girl.  I had a proper filler cap, valve wheel and sunshine globe in my parts, even a decal.

3a.jpg  4a.jpg

She cleaned up pretty good.  I don't get carried away with a lot of polishing, just clean 'em and use 'em.

6a.jpg

It's a strong runner, I'm happy with the results.  Thanks for the inspiration Will.

Thanks John.  The vent has a couple of dime sized chips on top, but overall good.  It fits the patina of the rest of the lantern.

Nice job on the clean up. I have only found one 202 myself. Mine is 8-54. I haven't had a chance to do much to it yet. I need to get busy.

Very well done!

I'm still looking for one. Rarer hereabouts than Arcs, it seems.

You always remember your first. . . . . . My 202 was found in a dusty antique store and bought for 12.00. Had no idea what it was until I got it home and cleaned it up. That was 20 years ago. I still have that 202 and 2 more. I don’t remember how I got those but I enjoy all of them equally for their character, like that Chevy commercial says every scratch is a story the patina is a testament to the longevity of a quality product. The imperfect ventilator to its duty as a lightens heat source, and the globe if original as to the character of the owner and for most we appreciate that special “ first time” and will remember it forever

Thanks for all the nice comments everyone.  It seems to be the season for 202s, there have been a lot posted lately.
Rob, mine sat for at least 1 1/2 years before it finally came together.  It was worth the wait.  Yours will shine soon enough.

I hope it shines up nice. I've been buying them faster than I can work on them lately. The fettle pile is growing quite fast. When I see a deal, I go for it. I can't help it. I'll get caught up eventually. I hope.

I just got my first 202 also. I am having a difficult time reading the date. It sports a low vent--any idea when that change happened? I can clearly see a B but no numbers.

The "B" you see is probably the indication for Brass bottom.  I don't know when the vent changed but both my 1954 and my 1958 have the tall vent.  Both had ceramic burners when I got them also.

I had a second cup of coffee and gave the lantern another look over. I found the date 3  62 under the Coleman embossed logo--I had not seen a lantern dated there before.

10/63 is the only date for a low vent 202. The change from high to low vent occcurred in 3/63 for the 200A..

Can't see your vent stud, Mike, but if it looks too long, someone just swapped the vents.

Edit: Mike, I looked your pics over from your other thread. Looks like the right stud height for a low vent. Never seen any date other than 10/63 for a low vent...either this fount was kicking around the factory for a year before it was assembled, or someone did a fount switch.

What great bright runners 202s are.

Side by side they always look a shade brighter than a 200a to me.

It makes me wonder if the air tube flows slightly more in stainless, or if maybe the ID is slightly larger.

One of my favorite runners , the 202.

Yeah, correct pre-1970 green low vent with the blue dot. As I said above, first non 10/63 low vent I’ve seen. Since the low vent 200A did not debut until 3/63, something got waylaid with this one.

Received my Coleman Light today and really enjoyed the article about the 202 Professional.  I knew my 8-54 is the first month of production with the steel bottom plate, but after reading the article, of course I had to go count the rays in the Sunshine logo.  Turns out it has 13 😃

I did the exact same thing when I got my Coleman Light, John.  I knew I had a 8 54 that I am working on and headed out to the garage to count the rays in the Sunshine logo.  Turns out it has 19 😢

So climbed up into my barn loft and looked at my 202 lanterns. Only have three of them, two are 19 line sunrise but the third has the thirteen line logo. Yippee. Too cold to look any further but the dates are 8-54 58; and 1-61. Will check tomorrow and confirm steel vs brass. Just got my newsletter today.
