Picked up 242b fettled now burning.  I did replace pump cup and it pressure tank to some degree.  While burning in an attempt to increase its brightness I started pumping and pumping and pumping to no avail.  THe mantle did not get any brighter and the tank didnt seem to pressurize. Is there a different pump cup for these lanterns?  The lantern has been burning for about two hours at a consistent 50 candle power I am guessing.  Can you believe it a 1936 burning in 2019.  Only if that Lantern could talk.

I've got a few coming up on their 100th birthday. Testament to the quality and design. Have you replaced the cap gasket, dunk tested for leaks? Check valve leaking? Others will be able to zero in on it for you.

I have replaced cap gasket.  Did not dunk test. I will do. But, I don't believe I am losing air anywhere.  If I was losing air/pressure the lantern would have eventually faded out.  Right?  It has been burning consistently now for 3hrs.  Slow and steady.

I always have to ask, did you spin tip cleaner while it is burning?? Did it help/change?

So....you are pumping like mad....and it doesn't get any harder to pump?? Or is it getting hard to pump?? It should get hard on your thumb after 50 pumps.
No, they all take same pump cup UNLESS it has the old style pump without a hole in pump knob.

Some cups just dont make pressure.  Rarely have a new one not work properly.  Did you put the new cup on properly?  Usually they need slack on the out stroke to let air around the cup so it doesn't create a vacuum.

keith and Duane thanks.  I have spun  the tip cleaner and of course it surpresses the flame to nothing but after a full revolution it is burning again.  The tip cleaner does not make the mantle any brighter. Yes I am pumping like mad and it does not get any harder to pump,  The pump cup I purchased from Old Coleman parts. Could this cup be undersized? Duane I did put on properly.  Is it a possibility that pump cylinder may have got oversized through years of use?  Just a note I turned lantern off after 5 hours of burning.  The lantern burned slow and steady and never changed light out put.  Off to work check in later.  Thanks

Nah, pump cylinder not oversized.

Does check valve hold air reasonably well?

"I started pumping and pumping and pumping to no avail.  THe mantle did not get any brighter and the tank didnt seem to pressurize." and  "Just a note I turned lantern off after 5 hours of burning."

Tank won't pressurize and it still burns for 5 hours? That's a magic lantern! Perhaps you have an inappropriate size mantle for the lantern, or possibly expectations for brightness are beyond the lantern's capability.

you need to test your pumps function . just cuz a new leather is installed doesnt mean its working like new ,  close the air stem tight , put thumb over pump knob hole and try n pump , it should only go down maybe 1/2 way due to resistance and kinda come back up when you let go . if you can push the plunger all the way down its not working right .

Silly question but did you oil the leather? A dry leather cup will act a bit like you are describing.

"I did replace pump cup and it pressure tank to some degree"

Make sure the pump cup edges face down into the tube and not outward towards the top.

maybe ia expecting to much.  I can close check valvve and keep stroking it.  Not sure what is going on.  I have lantern burning again tonight.  All the same as last night.

If you can close check valve/airstem and still pump, you have a problem.

Oil/stretch pump cup for starters. Pictures of the pump might help.
