I'm restoring the lantern I got from our Christmas contest. I've read that the black bands started in 12/51 but maybe not for the Christmas lanterns. The collar was sort of black when mike sent it too me but could have just been corrosion or soot. I polished it anyways but I'm about to re-paint the Fount and got to thinking maybe it should be black.
What do you guys think

If the date is 12-51, it could go either way. Look at the burner frame and that will tell the story. If the frame rest was painted black, the frame was as well. There were a lot of transitions that month.

That's what has  home isa bit confused on which way to go. This is how  it was the day I got it from mike. Frame seemed free of paint but not sure if the collar was painted and worn off or just corroded 20191224_115604-763x1612.jpg

That sure is a nice fount to paint it. Not trying to tell you what to do with your stuff but I think you will greatly diminish it’s value by painting it. I would try to polish it first.

not looking for any more Bday gpas. Honestly, if you have a 10-72 don’t let me know about it.

I agree with Jason on this one. It's only original once. The paint should polish up nicely. That looks like old soot on that frame rest. I would believe that you did it right by polishing the frame rest. No black band in my opinion.

You'll both be upset then and I'm sorry. I've already stipped it. I'm not worried about it's value. Don't ever plan to sell it. It's for me to enjoy until I'm gone

I think I can speak for Rob and say that neither of us will upset with you. It was just a suggestion. I’ve painted a few lanterns and have many more to paint. It will look good when finished so post some progress pics and some finished pics.

You're right Jason. Neither of us have a place to be upset about it. Mike, It's yours to do whatever you please. I think that we were both just giving advice to you in case you were trying to build a collection with more value to it. Original is always more valuable. Personal value definitely has it's place too. If you like it, do it. That's what really matters.

I know I appreciate it. Another person suggested the same so I'm having buyers remorse. Honesty I'm really good at polishing cars and I should have tried that first. Was quite a bit of rust around the collar and a few good scratches. I let my "jump in with both feet" way of working get the best of me. I can promise it will be a good paint job.
