I don’t need a full table. A half table will work just fine. I’d be more then happy to limit what I bring so someone else can have a spot too.

I finished the preliminary count this morning - 86 folks have committed to attending.  That is on track to be a record breaker.

Well found out my wife will coming with me. That's because it's going to be our 39 wedding anniversary Saturday. Said she was not spending another anniversary by herself. So make that 87 people. See all of you in a couple weeks.

Just a reminder that you need to make your hotel reservations before March 7 in order to get the reduced rate.  I just talked to the hotel and they have 2 King rooms and 11 double queens left in the block with the reduced rate.

Already have my reservation.. Not bringing much of anything except gasket material and punches and tools. I'll bring a few lanterns for light-up, but that's it... won't need a table, but will bring a small one with me if someone needs to go multi-level...

Our hotel reservations are made and we got snow chains for the trip. Don't want to get caught in another freak blizzard on way home like Webb, Ramsey and Culp got caught in going thru Illinois. Fortunately I can't read road signs at tollways and wound up going thru Chicago and Indy where it had died down. Worth every mile and every minute to hang out for the weekend at Jerry's with all of my Northern friends.

Hello,

My wife Diane is putting something together on Friday March 22nd for the wives/girlfriends/significant others to do while we are all "lanterning".  The information is below:

Fired Up Pottery
4112 Monona Dr, Madison WI  (3 miles away from Jerry’s Camping Center).

An instructor led canvas painting class, $35 per person.

This will be around the 1 pm time frame on Friday and will last between 2 and 3 hours.  Please let me know by March 15 of any that are interested.

You can shoot me a PM, respond here, email at cainkrem@gmail.com or send me a message through Facebook (CainAlanK).

Have a wonderful day!

Cain

I'll be attending with guidosarduchi and two other guys from the Waupaca area, I'll send more details via PM.  If anyone has an extra 523 or nickel 200 I would be interested!  Josh

Are gatherings like these a good place to sell common stuff? Contemplating coming up but would like to sell 40-50 common lanterns and 20-30 common stoves.

Collectors at gatherings like this go to the same garage sales and flea markets that you do.  If it is common, it needs to be priced veeeeeeery attractively.  Just my two cents.  Also, there are no more sales tables available - or more precisely
we are out of room to place tables.

Steve hit the nail on the head. The collectors that show up at these regional gatherings are a tough crowd for someone selling common stuff.

I went to my first gathering last June in Gettysburg, I was new to the hobby (still am), brought pretty much everything I had to sell there, and most of it went back home.  95% of what I had to sell were commons.  I did go home with another dozen or so commons I bought there for $5 or so each.  But I was okay with it, since I was still learning, and cheap common lanterns are great sources of PRACTICE for my interest in the hobby.  I learn on the common stuff, and the experience rolls off on the less-common ones.  I have since found that refurbishing the common ones and listing them on eBay or Craigslist for a fair price, mainly to folks that are just campers (not collectors) and want a good deal on a running lantern.

My advise, bring only the less common stuff to sell or trade, and some parts like globes, good vents, etc. that could find some new homes too.  And bring a pile of cash, cuz' you're gonna want to pick up a pile of new stuff for your hobby!

If you plan to be in Madison Thursday and you would be willing to help retrieve and set up tables and chairs for the gathering, let me know.  Several of the guys who usually help are not available and my shoulder is toast.  Thanks.

John - Unless you are planning to sew the tear in my rotator cuff back together I think I will pass.  On second thought, I will pass even if that is your plan.

I  will be arriving late on Thursday, but can be on hand early Friday morning to help finish setup.

Are you going to put out a call for attendees to bring munchies?

David - If attendees want to bring a dish to pass for lunch either day it will certainly be welcomed.  We are approaching 100 people coming so the expense to the Engbrings is not inconsiderable.  It would be nice if people who are going to bring something would let us know so Pat can figure that into her food calculations.  THanks.

Steve, Lita and I will be there some time Thursday afternoon.  We'll go by the store to see if we can help.  Time just depends on how far we make it Wednesday night.

I'm in for a donation to the food fund or we could pick up something local.

Also I'm going to post a few things in Classifieds to see if any interest for me to bring.

Steve,We will make dozens of cookies and bring. Tell Pat, not to stress about the food, it will be taken care of.    We also talked about the same thing Warren and Lita said, give to a food fund or go by a grocery deli and pick up things.  We will also be there Thursday afternoon, driving from Hannibal, Mo that day.

We will be bringing some of Racines best of O&H kringle to pass as well as some to add to the Engbrings' personal stash. If luncheon hot food is needed I could do some pulled pork, or brats, dogs or some chili or something. Thoughts?

Plan B

I would like to suggest that if anyone wants to bring munchies, they just bring enough for 5-10 people.
That way no one is has to worry about bringing enough to share with 100+ people.
And we get a variety.
I will bring carrots, celery and the like because I am trying to get on the good side of Terry Marsh.

I talked with Pat tonight.  On Friday, Dawn will be making chili and I will do vegetarian chili.  On Saturday, she has arranged for smoked sliced pork sandwiches and I will be doing coleslaw.  Salads, desserts, and other sides are welcome at either meal.  Due to the large numbers anticipated, we will be doing the pizza Friday night at a church near the Engbrings.  The church has requested that no GPAs be lit on their property due to insurance concerns.  After the pizza, we will head to the Engbrings for dessert and the light up and hay ride.

It is with great sadness that I must report that Jerry Engbring passed away this morning.  He was a great friend and mentor in the hobby.  There will be a wake Thursday and the funeral will be on Friday.  Due to Jerry's passing, the gathering has been canceled.

I only knew Jerry for a few short years but what a great guy. The Great Lakes Fall Campouts won’t be the same without him.
When a very good friend of mine died at a very early age the priest said something at his eulogy that has always stuck with me “our group of friends aren’t getting smaller, they are getting closer”

A few of us have been discussing a less organized "memorial" gathering for those that are local or not changing travel plans. I don't have space to offer that would allow display or sales tables, but just tossing out there that my garage would be available to those who still want to share the fellowship and light a lantern. I'm about 45 minutes north of Madison just off I-39. I do not want to step on the wonderful Engbring family's toes at all, but if any are interested in a Saturday morning-to-afternoon gathering in honor of Jerry please let me know.

Thanks to those that showed up at my home on Saturday. A great group of folks (a number of which left before/arrived after the photo was taken) spent the middle of the day talking GPA, eating fresh GPA made kettlecorn, telling stories, analyzing pieces for Terry's archives, and a bit of shooting went down too. My family had a great time as well. We may need to look into a summertime get together here in the future. Long live the Great Lakes Gathering and those who made it what it is.
